A preliminary study showed that in farmers' fields there were between 17 and 42 percent of plants with root rot symptoms. The pathogens identified were Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium sp., Macrophomina phaseolina and Rhizoctonia solani. A survey conducted in 6 prefectures for determining root rot incidence during development showed that percentage of rotten roots increased with development and that at maturity 44 to 89 percent of the plants had roots with rot symptoms.
