This work was conducted at the Valley Simpson sector, 25 km from Coyhaique, XI Region, Chile, From January 1, 1991, to May 22, 1991 with the purpose to assess the effect of four carrying capacities (25, 35, 45 and 55 lambs/ha) on the pasture response (forage availability, height and botanical composition), and that of lambs (weight gain, body condition and carcass quality). Forty Corriedale lambs per treatment were used, from the Coironal Zone, and weaned in December 1990. For carcass analyses five repetitions per treatment were used. Weight gain of lambs presented no significant differences (P>= 0,05) until late February. Subsequently, it presented a trend reflecting in final weights, that shows the treatment 25 lambs/ha with a mean weight of 36.4 kg, and the treatment 55 lambs/ha with 31.2 kg, existing a significative difference (P <= 0,05). Meat production per surface until (kg/ha) presented a significative difference (P <= 0.05) favouring the treatment C55 with 640 kg in respect to the others; then it is the treatment C45 (513 kg/ha) that was superior to C25 (394 kg/ha), and C35 (40 kg/ha). Body condition showed no significant differences (P >= 0.05) either between treatments C25 and C35 or treatments C45 and C55, but a significant difference (P <= 0,05) could be observed among them. Carcass analyses showed that the lower carrying capacities had heavier animals with greater fat deposits than the higher carrying capacities, with a significant difference (P <= 0,05) between them. It is to be noted that in the carcass yield there was no significant difference (P >0,05). The evolution in pasture availability showed that this declined more rapidly with higher carrying capacities, where a significant difference (P <= 0,05) was observed. In regard to botanical composition, at the beginning it contained over 30% white clover, and during this trial it was replaced by gramineous plants. In addition, it was noted that at the low carrying capacities this replacement was slow.
