Estimating forage intake from the growth of beef cattle.

An equation is developed for predicting the forage intake of beef cattle from their liveweight and rate of growth. The quality of the forage selectively grazed is estimated solely from the growth rate and weight of the cattle, thus eliminating the need for a laboratory analysis. Predicted values agreed well with published data and pen feeding, with a coefficient of variation of about 8.7 percent.
