The influence of larval instar, concentration, exposure period and temperature on the activity of limonene, a citrus product, against Culex quinquefasciatus Say was studied under laboratory conditions. The 2nd larval instar was more susceptible to limonene than the 4th when treated with 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 ppm under 3 experimental temperatures of 23 plus minus 1 degree C, 28 plus minus 1 degree C and 33 plus minus 1 degree C. Limonene was generally more toxic to the 2nd instar larvae at 23 plus minus 1 degree C and 33 plus minus 1 degree C than at 28 plus minus 1 degree C. The progression of mortality of both instars at 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 ppm revealed significant correlation with exposure time in most of the treatments. These factors should be considered when limonene is applied against mosquito populations under natural conditions.
