In view of the increasing demand for water as an important production factor pot experiments with spring wheat and spring barley were established to test different herbicides for their effect on the water use efficiency. Soon after application the transpiration rate began to decrease over several weeks. The simultaneous inhibition of matter production led to a higer coefficient of total transpiration in the herbicide treatments, despite of a lower total water consumption throughout in whole growth period. Further detailed studies are necessary particularily under conditions of a field experiment.
