Using the intracellular pressure probe and the technique of intracellular pressure relaxation the tugor pressure (Pt), the volume elasticity modulus of cell walls (Epsilon) and the hydraulic conductivity of cell membranes (Lp) were measured in the storage parenchyma of sugar beet and stock beet tap root. In the mature tap roots of sugar beet Pt values reached 1,8-2,0 MPa and Epsilon amounted to 16 MPa. These values are much higher than those characteristic of higher plants including stock beet examined in this work (up to 1,4 MPa and 7,0 MPa, respectively). Lp values for the storage parenchyma cell membranes in sugar beet were 5 times lower than those in stock beet. A relationship between the examined characteristics of water exchange on one hand, and sucrose concentration and osmotic potential of the tissue on the other hand, is analyzed in the course of sugar beet development as well as the nature of Epsilon and Lp dependence on Pt. A requlatory role of the investigated characteristics in concentrating sucrose and in limiting this process in the storage parenchyma cells of sugar beet is discussed.
