Soil samples taken from commercial tomato crops showed that characteristic, concentric patterns of pH, soluble salts and nutrients around the trickle irrigation outlets and extending in cone shapes through the soil profile are quickly established and persist throughout the season. Similar distribution patterns were not found in trickle irrigated peat modules, but in both trickle irrigated and capillary watered peat modules nutrients and salts accumulated in the top half of the module, particularly along the centre line.
