Fresh water ecosystems are undergoing steady contamination by heavy metals originating from both anthropogenic and geochemical origin. Southern Lake Maggiore has been chosen for an extended study on input, displacements and accumulation in the different ecological compartments and output of some technologically important heavy metals. The ecological compartments considered were water, sediments, aquatic flora, plankton and fish, as well as bedrock and atmospheric outfall. The ecosystem and the sampling schemes are described and the general orientation of the project discussed.
