The Snake Pit hydrothermal field, at a water depth of 3500m, is located on a volcanic segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 23°2Z'N. In this area the spreading rate is 2.5 cm/year. Samples where collected trom the deepest part of the deposit inc1uding the stockwork and the massive copper rich core. At the outer part Fe-rich massive sulfides and Zn-rich chimneys from the top of the mound were also sampled. The sulfides, obtained during the HYDROSNAKE croise (1988), can be considered to be representative of the whole ore body.
Show more [+] Less [-]Le champ hydrothermal du Snake Pit situé à 3500 m de profondeur. Il appartient à un segment de la dorsale médio-Atlantique à 23°22'N, dont le taux d'expansion est 2,5 cm/an. L'échantillonnage des dépôts hydrothennaux, effectué dans ce champ est assez représentatif de l'ensemble de l'amas sulfuré; les échantillons ont été prélevés dans la partie profonde de l'amas (stockwork), dans le coeur massif (sulfures de Cu), à la périphérie (sulfures de Fe) et dans le complexes sommitale (édifices poreux riches en Zn).
