Damage and habits of the Carmenta foraseminis Eichlin moth on Theobroma cacao fruits in the Satipo area - Peru | Daños y hábitos de la polilla Carmenta foraseminis Eichlin en frutos de Theobroma cacao en la zona de Satipo - Perú

The Carmenta foraseminis moth is the most important pest of cocoa cultivation in the entire region and its identification has been recent, so there are no studies of its insect habits, since they were previously confused with fungal diseases; Therefore, the objective was to determine damage and habits of the Carmenta foraseminis Eichlin moth on cocoa fruits. Harvests were made in the field between the months of March to July, the time of highest crop production; Observations of the stages were also made in the laboratory. The results show new behaviors of the pest that have not been described by other authors, especially regarding the larvae in the epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp of the fruit, in the same way its association with fungal diseases, especially with the pseudo fungus Phytophthora palmivora . It is concluded that from the green fruits signs of the presence of the plague are already shown with the expulsion of brown excrements towards the outside of the fruit, in the penultimate larval stage it pierces the placenta of the fruit and rarely manages to feed on pregerminated seeds; in the last larval stage it feeds on the mesocarp and builds a tunnel with a circular mouth in the pericarp closed by dry tissue. The prepupa builds a cocoon with silk threads lined with brown excreta; the adult emerges in the morning and takes about 15 minutes to stretch its wings to jump into flight and then a straight flight without buzzing.

La polilla Carmenta foraseminis es la plaga más importante del cultivo de cacao en toda región y su identificación ha sido reciente, por lo que no hay estudios de sus hábitos del insecto, dado a que fueron confundidos anteriormente con enfermedades fungosas; por ello el objetivo fue determinar daños y hábitos de la polilla Carmenta foraseminis Eichlin en frutos de cacao. Se hizo recolecciones en campo entre los meses de marzo a julio, época de mayor producción del cultivo; asimismo se hizo observaciones de los estadios en laboratorio. Los resultados arrojan nuevos comportamientos de la plaga que no han sido descritos por otros autores, sobre todo en cuanto a la larva en el epicarpio, mesocarpio y endocarpio del fruto, de igual modo su asociación con enfermedades fungosas sobre todo con el pseudo hongo Phytophthora palmivora. Se concluye que desde los frutos verdes ya se muestran signos de la presencia de la plaga con la expulsión de excrementos marrones hacia el exterior del fruto, en el penúltimo estadio larval barrena la placenta del fruto y raras veces logra alimentarse de semillas pregerminadas; en el último estadio larval se alimenta del mesocarpio y construye un túnel con una boca circular en el pericarpio cerrado por tejido seco. La prepupa construye un cocón con hilos de seda revestido con excretas marrones; el adulto emerge por la mañana y demora unos 15 minutos en estirar sus alas para emprender vuelo a saltos y luego un vuelo recto sin zumbido.
