For many years Kraljevo has been faced with the problem of securing sufficient amounts of sound potable water. In an attempt to resolve the issue of water supply in Kraljevo, a Preliminary Design of the Lopatnica Regional Water Supply System, was prepared in 1998, in which river Lopatnica was identified as a water source that may provide long-term water supply for the population of Kraljevo and its suburbs, in conjugation with the existing Zicko Polje - Konarevo Water Source. In view of great non-uniformity of discharge in the natural regime of the water course, rational utilization of water resources of the Lopatnica is conditional upon the formation of a reservoir. Erection of a 100 m high dam, creation of a reservoir with a storage volume of 30 million cubic meters, construction of key structures of the system, and balancing of the river Lopatnica waters would secure delivery of about 1000 l/s as an annuual average, or 1400 l/s during the summer period. This would provide long-term water supply for the Municipality of Kraljevo as the major user (the city and those communities that are deemed justified users of the regional system). Furthermore, certain amounts of water would be available for other potential users (Kragujevac, Vrnjacka Banja and Trstenik).
