Monitoring of water quality, biological characteristics of fish farm ecosystems and fish health - basis for successful production of carp in semiintensive system

There is 11 000 - 12 000 hectares of carp fish farms on the territory of Serbia. Carp is mainly reared in monoculture or polyculture with accompanied species (white and gray bughead and white grasscarp) and predator species (wells, pike perch and northern pike) in semi intensive system. Perspectives for father development of carp fish farming in Serbia is in expansion of areas for fish farming and in increasing production at existing fish farms. This very specific type of fish rearing, semi intensive system, must include water quality monitoring, biology of water ecosystems and fish health. Monitoring of these parameters provide basic data for prompt and adequate appliance of agrotechnical, technological and preventive measures for protection of reared fish. These measures also provide a stable fish lake ecosystem during production cycle, small conversion index, bigger growth rate, small mortality, decrease of production costs and as a result a successful and profitable fish production.
