Biological and economic characteristics of the new cotton varieties Strumica - 104 and Strumica - 105

This paper describes newly created cotton varieties, Strumica-104 and Strumica-105, created using the reciprocal sexual hybridization method with a continous individual selection of the best forms. Strumica-104 variety was created from A/2X4521+147F hybrid combinations. It belongs to the Gossypium hirsutum L. species. The stem is firm, about 80 cm high. One or two meagre vegetative branches are formed. The fibre is white, fine, of good strength and equal length. Strumica-105 variety belongs to the Gossypium hirsutum L. species. It has a firm stem, the average height is 83.5 cm. It forms 1-2 meagre vegetative branches. The fibre is white, good of strength and equal in length. -Vegetation period of these varieties is approximately equal to that of the standard ones, which, under Yugoslavian conditions, fall into the early cotton group. The varieties are resistant to drought, but respond to irrigation very well. -The average yield of raw cotton of the Strumica-104 variety is 1974 kg/ha, which is 129 kg/ha more than of the standard variety A/2, and 108 kg/ha more than of the standard variety 4521. The differences are significant. The average yield of pure fibre of this variety is 702 kg/ha, being 51-62 kg/ha higher than that of the standard varieties. The length of the fibre is 27.93 mm. -The average yield of raw cotton of Strumica-105 variety is 2021 kg/ha, being 171 kg/ha higher than that o the standard A/2 variety and 155 kg/ha higher than of the 4521 standard. The average length of the Strumica-105 fibre is 28.24 mm. The yield of pure fibre is 710 kg/ha, being 70 kg/ha higher than the A/2 standard, and 59 kg/ha higher than 4521 standard.
