The influence of the herbicide that is the most often used here, Dichlobenil (C7H3Cl2N) on the chloroplasts pigment content in the leaves of the red currant was investigated. Dichlobenil was used as a component of Casorona G(6.75% active matter) in mid-March before the occurrence of weeds, in the following quantities:5.4, 6.75 and 8.1 kg/ha (80, 100 and 120 kg/ha of Casorona G). The invesigation was performed upon the Red Lake variety. The largest dose of Dichlobenil killed all present weeds completely; the smallest dose was very efficient against annual, but not efficient enough against perennial weeds and did not cause phytotoxicity symptoms on the leaves. The medium dose caused slight, and the large one moderate, in some cases even heavier leaf chlorosis. The smallest dose (5.4 kg/ha) of Dichlobenil did not affect adversely the investigated leaf pigments content. Larger doses, especially 8.1 kg/ha, caused reduction of all pigments, on the average for the whole period May-Sept, as well as for each month. The 6.75 kg/ha dose of Dichlobenil reduced the content of chlorophyll a by 2.25% on the averge, of chlorophyll b by 2.31%, of total chlorophylls (a+b) by 2.26% and of total carotenoids by 2.17%. The largest dose (8.10 kg/ha) of Dichlobenil reduced chlorophyll a by 5.08%, chlorophyll b by 4.90%, the total chlorophylls (a+b) by 5.03% and the total carotenoids by 2.24%. The chlorophyll a and b ratio was constant in all variants (2.56). The ratio of the sum of both chlorophylls and total carotenoids varied slightly from 2.23 to 2.20, depending on the dose, while in the control it was 2.24. Therefore, the treatment did not influence notably the quantitative ratio of the chloroplasts pigments in the leaf.
