On a dairy farm glutathione peroxidase activity was investigated in the blood of 27 calves during the first two months of life. It was measured in their dams immediately after parturition, too. At the same time some hematological parameters were determined in the blood of all the investigated animals. Glutathione peroxidase activity in blood was determined according to Agergaard and Thode-Jenssen(1). Glutathione peroxidase activity decreases significantly from 229,1 microkat/l of blood in 1 to 3 days old calves to 164,5 microkat/l of blood in 57 to 65 days old calves. Mean glutathione peroxidase activity in their dams immedately after parturition is 197,3 microkat/l. Glutathione peroxidase activity in the blood of cows has no influence on he activity in their offsprings. Glutathione peroxidase activity, expressed per erytrocyte in calves, decreases during the first two months of life from 22,7 x 10- microkat in 1 to 3 days old calves to 1,1 x 10-12 microkat in 57 to 65 days old calves.
