On the basis of performed studies, the following has been concluded: Several technological steps should be taken (shredding of plant remainders and harrowing after shredding 2-4 times) when gathering maize grains using the standard method with the aim of preparing the maize plant for ploughing. These technological steps require more machines, which results in more treading on soil, more labourers and a greater energy consumption. Gathering of maize grains by shredding maize plants at the same time, has the following advantages over the standard method: Directly after grain gathering, the maize plant is left in such a state that ploughing is possible immediately after 1-2 harrowings; less machinery is needed; there is less treading over the soil; less labourers are needed; energy consumption is lower and therefore, costs per unit of land are decreased.
