Effect of spring herbage surplus on white clover (Trifolium repens) content in sward

On hill pastures it is often impossible to cut spring herbage surplus and make the hay because of land inclination, stony ground or overgrowth with bushes. Because of this the summer pasture is of low quality, sward regrowth is slow and it becomes grass dominant with low content of clovers. On hill pasture with control grazig system for cattle the effect of low rate of herbicide application after first rotation was investigated, to suppress the growth of grasses and higher herbs. The herbicide gramoxon was used in two rates; 0.8 l/ha and 1.6 l/ha. Two-year results showed, that after herbicide application legume content increased up to 15-30% respectively, total amount of available pasture was similar to control, in summer content of dead matter in pasture was lower, regrowth of sward in late summer was better because of higher legume content. Low rate herbicide application can be used on that area of pasture, where hay making is impossible. Because of better grass growth in spring, the sward becomes more open weeds invasion and with time it becomes overgrowth with shrubs. Finally such an area is not suitable for grazing.
