In field experiments 100 different broomcorn (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) genotypes were examined during the period 1984-1989 at three localities. The panicle weight (untreshed, treshed and their ratio, seed per panicle), panicle quality (shape, basic colour and discoloration, average length and length of individual fibres, number of fibres and fibre finess) and plant height with its components (plant height, stalk height, length of peduncle, fiber length, length of panicle, flag leaf sheat length and panicle exertion) were studied. The phenotypic, genotypic and ecotypic coefficients of variation and correlation as well as the genotype X environment interaction were calculated, along with path-coefficient analysis of character association. According to stalk height genotypes were divided into three groups ("Standard", "American Dwarf" and "European Dwarf"). The breeding objectives of broomcorn and the genotypes for further breeding were defined.
