Antibody level in the period from birth to the 112th day of age was observed in the blood serum of piglets originated from gilts infected with a pathogenic porcine parvovirus (PPV) strain during gestation. Gilts were infected in the first half of pregnancy with a NDL-8 strain of PPV (National Disease Center, Ames, Iowa, USA). The highest antibody titre was found 24 h after birth and averaged 1:2536. It then dropped continually to be 1:226 on day 28. For the next 14 days titres rose again to reach 1:1289. However, on day 112 of age average titre was only 1:13. There were considerable differences between groups. Titre elevation after 28 days of age can probably be related to the appearance of the piglet own antibodies as a result of the immunologic response to PPV infection.
