Baca, F. (Institut za kukuruz "Zemun Polje", Beograd - Zemun (Yugoslavia))
In mid July 1992 a severe attack of Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (western corn rootworm, WCR), a new maize pest, was observed. The occurrence of imagoes was observed on a 0.5 ha small-farmer plot in the vinicity of the Belgrade Airport. This lead to the assumption that the pest was most probably introduced into Yugoslavia right there. A more detailed study of the distribution of Diabrotica conducted in July and August of 1993 in the broader area of Serbia confirmed this assumption. On the basis of these findings, it was established that the pest spread from Surcin Plateau to the northwest into Lower Srem crossing both the Sava and Danube rivers. Biological properties of Diabrotica virgifera virgifera are described.
