Maize ear and associated fungi in field and crib environment

Intensity of natural maize ear rot was evaluated in location of Zemun Polje (Yugoslavia) during 1990 and 1991. The samples of stored maize were collected in Valjevo, Pozarevac, Vrsac, Zrenjanin, Vranje nad Pirot towns (Yugoslavia). Decay of maize in fields during 1991 was mainly caused by fungi Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium verticillioides. The effects of Bipolaris zeicola and Ustilago maydis on maize ear rot were not so significant. A total of twenty fungous species were isolated from stored maize. Content of both the zearalenone and T-2 toxin was higher than that of the ochratoxin A in the maize kernel sample with severe rot symptoms. Aflatoxin B1 was not found in any sample.
