Twenty five S3 maize families were selected from the population Mo17 I. All cobs showed variability with respect to their characteristics. The genotypes in type of the recurrent parent Mo17 Ht were selected visually from the population Mo17 I but with longer cob, more rows and higher 1000-seed mass. The families from the groups three (Mo17 I-11 and Mo17 I-15), two (Mo17 I-14) and five (Mo17 I-11 and Mo17 I-19) having cob length over 20.60 cm; 18 rows per cob and 1000-seed mass over 366.35 grams, respectively, have practical significance for breeding.
