In a long-range monoculture of maize (since 1965) the effect of fertilizers has been investigated. Weather conditions in the years analysed affected considerably all the characteristics investigated, as well as the effect of the treatments studied. The variants of applied fertilizers considerably affected the yield of grain and its crude protein, content of nitrogen and proteins and removal of nitrogen and content of NO3 in the soil. In order to decrease the nitrates in the soil, especially after harvest, the system of fertilization of maize with nitrogen by using organic manures needs to be further improved.
