Ultrafiltration of colloidal inorganic oxide dispersions

Ultrafiltration of colloidal inorganic oxide dispersions was investigated in a 200 ml capacity batch cell and with an effective membrane area of 12.5 cm. Specific gel resistances, obtained from the (t-t1)/(V-V1) versus V-V1 plots, depend on the bulk solution physicochemical properties, and on the operating conditions. The specific gel resistance of spherical silica particles and hexagonal pseudoboehmite particles strongly increases with the pressure difference. The fibrillar boehmite particles give incompressible gel, and its specific resistance were an order of magnitude higher than of those for pseudoboehmite and silica particles. The stationary permeate flux in stirred ultrafiltration increase with increasing temperature and decreasing bulk concentration. However, the temperature does not affect the gel concentration and the boundary layer thickness.
