In the Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje", Belgrade - Zemun, Yugoslavia, the gene bank was established in 1960 and it was appointed to collect, characterize, classify, evaluate and maintain the material both from Yugoslavia and the World. The basic collection consists of 2178 samples of the local Yugoslav populations and 3259 samples of the synthetics, composites, populations and inbred lines collected throughout the world. The whole local material was characterized, and mostly evaluated for the important maize diseases. Combining ability of local populations was partially evaluated. Gene bank future activities consist of completing samples data and further material evaluation.
