In the course of a long-term study of fish populations in coastal waters of the South Adriatic region (Montenegro, Yugoslavia), the presence has been discovered in a number of localities, particularly within the Grbalj Valley, of a small size cyprinid subspecies Phoxinellus stimphalicus montenegrinus. This subspecies represents the only typically fresh water member of the fish fauna of all South Adriatic coastal waters, with the only exception of river Bojana. Seasonal variations of water quality have been followed in waters inhabited by this subspecies. The majority of natural habitats of this endemic cyprinid are represented by small rivers and streams, within industrial and agricultural zones. A number of measures have been proposed for the protection of this endemic species, its populations and its natural habitats. Preliminary data have also been obtained on its maintenance, culturing and reproduction in captivity.
