In order to study the effects of thermal stress provoked by low temperatures in xylophagous insects, metabolic response of Morimus funereus and Cerambyx cerdo larvae exposed to constant temperature of 0 deg C was comparatively investigated. The results obtained demonstrated that in the larvae of the insect species examined trehalose concentration can be increased under experimantal conditions while this rise occurs under natural conditions immediately before winter seasons. This would be taken as a proof that in these insect species haemolymph carbohydrates play a significant role in cryoprotective mechanism. Exposure of the larvae to -1 deg C led to the change in digestive enzymes activity. The response of these enzymes to low temperature, especially that of the amylase was species specific.
