Permethrin is a strong neurotoxic insecticide of the pyretroid group, which is efficient in the control of agricultural pests and of Arthropoda ectoparasites in human and veterinary medicine. The object of research, in this paper, is a cytogenetic analysis of the effect of permethrin in human lymphocyte cultures of peripheral blood. We examined the frequency of the occurrence of cells with numerical (aneuploidy and polyploidy) and structural aberrations of chromosomes (interruptions and lesions - gaps). Permethrin did not exhibit genotoxic effects at the cytogenetic level in the applied experimental concentrations (1.2, 3, 6, and 12 mg/ml). On the other hand, the determination of the mitotic index (number of cells undergoing mitosis per thousand cells) showed a suppression of mitotic activity already at the lowest concentration (1.2 mg/ml), while an increased permethrin concentration enhanced cytotoxic (or cytostatic) effects.
