F2 population size and genetic variability for studies of resistance to pathogens of root and stalk rot of maize

The optimal size of F2 population necessary to develop hybrid combinations resistant to pathogens of maize root and stalk rot was studied. The differences among populations of 100, 200, 300 and 500 plants were determined by genetic parameters: mean values of the population evaluation, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov's one-sample test, genetic and phenotypic variance, coefficients of genetic and phenotypic variances, broad-sense heritability, number of test-crosses of hybrids more resistant than the check and genetic gain by the application of HS recurrent selection. Significant differences in the degree of pathogenicity of maize root and stalk rot over both locations and investigation years were determined justifying the performance of plots in various environments. The fungi of the genus Fusarium, the section Liseol, Elegans and Discolor, were pathogens of maize root and stalk rot mostly isolated in all locations. The results point to the possibility to work with a lower number of plants per population.
