Variation of quantitative characteristics of Tsigai breed of sheep

The aim of these investigations was to find out the average values and variabilities of characteristics, to study the effect of systematic genetic and environmental factors on their characteristics, to estimate the genetic parameters necessary for appraisal of the selection success, to show tha possible effect of selection, to derive the judgements of the breeding values of animals by applying of different linear models, and to show the possibility of genetic changes by applying of progeny and performance testing of animals. By the investigation, 457 ewes of Tsigai breed from the the reproductive flock of D.P.P.G. "Rit" in Coka (Yugoslavia), have been included which lambed in the period 1990-1995. In ewes included the following traits have been analysed: weight at birth, wool yield at the first shearing, length of staple, age at the first lambing, length of gestation period and fertility. Besides the characteristics mentioned, the birth weight of 1335 lambs descendants of the ewes studied, born in the first, second and third lambings, has been measured.
