Bacteriological characteristics of Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. strains of different origin

In this thesis pathogenic, cultural and biochemical-physiological characteristics of 22 isolates of Erwinia amylovora, originating from different hosts and different localities in Yugoslavia and in the World were investigated in details. Besides tobacco, the investigated isolates caused hypersensitive reaction of Solanum nigrum and Pelargonium sp. Necrotic changes followed by the occurrence of bacterial exudate were visible on artificially inoculated unripened pear fruits (Viliam's), plum (Stenley), apple (Gloster), cherry (Sju). Different degree of pathogenicity of the investigated isolates was proved on the artificially inoculated apricot fruits (Madjarska najbolja), while on the inoculated unripened sour cherry fruits (Keleris 14) only necrotic spots were visible without occurrence of bacterial exudate. The investigated isolates caused necrosis of artifially inoculated young shoots of apple, pear, quince and firethorn. All investigated isolates of Erwinia amylovora manifested extreme similarity concerning their cultural characteristics, except Logan's medium, on which two types of colonies were observed. Our isolates also manifested big similarity in respect to the utilization of nitrogen compounds, carbohydrates, desintegration of macromolecules (starch, gelatin, aesculin, lecithin) and other biochemical characteristics. It can be concluded that significant differences between the investigated isolates regarding their bacteriological characteristics were not obserwed, which confirmed previously noticed resemblance of the isolates of Erwinia amylovora originating from pomaceous fruit trees and ornamental plants, hosts of Erwinia amylovora.
