Membrane processes are one of new technologies that are widely used in water treatment. In past decades they are used usually for desalinization of sea and brackish water, but from early 80's they are also applied for removal of suspended and dissolved matter from ground and surface water. Efficiency, reliability and rather low operational cost induce more frequent application of membranes in water treatment. The latest experiences in application of nanofiltration in potable water treatment plants are given. The estimation of investment and operational cost of membrane water treatment plants are given in this paper, and these values are compared with investment and operational cost of conventional water treatment plant with ozone and GAC. The applicability of this technology for treatment of groundwater in town of Zrenjanin (Serbia, Yugoslavia) is discussed.
