It is often necessary in intensive pig production to synchronize estrus in sexually mature gilts in order to secure a sufficient number of pregnant animals to improve the reproduction group. Estrus and ovulation are synchronized through control of the duration of the luteal phase of the cycle and the use of different hormone preparations. It has been established that the best results of estrus and ovulation synchronization, and the achieved fertility, are obtained with the administration of progestagen preparations ("Regumate", for instance), which can be combined with an injection of gonadotropin preparations (PMSG, HCG, GnRh). The administration of luteolitic preparations or just gonadotropin does not satisfactory results in pigs regarding the degree of synchronization of estrus and ovulation in treated animals.
