The possibility of keeping seeds of autochthonous populations of onion (Allium cepa)

After a period of 12 months keeping of the seeds we came to the following conclusions: The seed of onion in conditions of room temperature without packing with humidity of 8% (control) decreases germination from the initial 93% to 77.5%. Quality is worst kept in seeds with highest humidity (8.57%) in the paper packing at the room temperature and at the temperature of -18 deg C total germination of 83.3% and 83.6%, respectively. At keeping the seed at +4 deg C germination is kept well and with an increased amount of humidity (8.57%) in all ways of packing (paper 86.6%, PE-folium 89.3%, aluminium 90.6%). Similar is the case at room temperature where the germination is seeds with humidity 8.57% and PE-folium packing is 89% while with 8.65% humidity in aluminium packing is 90%. The best results are found in keeping seeds with the least humidity (5.70%), aluminium packing at temperature of -18 deg C (germination 92.5%). Paper packing has weaker barier properties and gives poorer results than the PE-folium and aluminium packing. It is essential than the seed humidity is reduced under 6%.
