We studied the activity of nitrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase in the nodules of four soybean varieties. NS-10, NS-16 and NS-21 were developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, and Corsoy from the USA. The plants were inoculated with the strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum (511, 518, 17, 2/1 and 1003). Soybean plants were analyzed after growing for 36 and 51 days in Jensen solution. Nitrogenase activity was in positive correlation with mass and nitrogen content in the nodules. The highest glutamate dehydrogenase activity was detected with the strain 17, which achieved the lowest mass and nitrogen content in the nodules of varieties NS-10, NS-20 and Corsoy.
