Spring viramiae of carp, the first time described by Schaperclaus, which invaded countries world-wide is beginning to be an increasingly important disease for fish husbandry in Yugoslavia. During a several-year investigation period (from 1986-1997), conducted on different localities of carp ponds, containing over 1950 fish, we succeeded in the isolation and identification of Rhabdovirus carpio in 254 samples of carp, one sample of amour and one sample of tolstolobic, in other words 39.47 of the examined fish ponds was contaminated with the spring viramiae of carp (SVC). Routine methods of viral investigation were applied including virus isolation in cell culture, identification of the virus via serum neutralizing test using anti - spring viramiae of carp (SVC) serum. Our examination reveals that spring viramiae of carp (SVC) is widely distributed in the Republic of Serbia (Yugoslavia). Eradication of the disease in the current conditions of carp breeding in Serbia (Yugoslavia) is practically impossible to apply. Beside the prophylactic and sanitary measures, immunization of fish is the only successful model of action against this disease.
