A survey is given of the present anthropogenic influences on running waters along the Southadriactic coast (Montenegro, Yugoslavia), caused by urban, industrial and agricultural development of the coastal region, the pollution by waste water, the obstruction and regulation of running waters, and the introduction of allochthonous fish species. These mostly negative influences affect the status of the populations of commercially important migratory fish species (mullets - Mugilidae, eels - Anguilla anguilla, sea bass - Dicentrarchus labrax), and of the populations of other fish species of particular interest (e.g., the endemic subspecies Phoxinellus stymphalicus montenegrianus). An inventory has been established on the ground of our investigations of the Southadriatic coastal waters from the point of view of the protection of natural resources and the possibilities of their rational exploitation in aquaculture. A critical survey is also given of the existing protection oriented legal acts concerning the protection of aquatic systems and of fish populations in the coastal region of Montenegro (Yugoslavia). Based on our findings and on the experience of a number of other countries (concerning particularly the eel), a number of protective measures are recommended, aiming at an improvement of the status of the presently endangered populations of commercially important and highly appreciated migratory fish species.
