Application of hand refractometry OIR 32-95 0022 for total solids' determination in milk

The aim of this study was to test the possibilities of application of Hand Refractometer OIR 32-95 0022 for the determination of total solids content in milk. Hence, the purpose of this refractometer could be the determination of added water in milk, as well. It is essential to work at a known temperature and to calibrate the instrument with distilled water. The results registered by Hand Refractometer OIR 32-95 0022 were compared with gravimetric method and Fleischman's formula. The experiments, performed by utilizing milk with different fat content (1.6-6.65) with added water (5-20) showed impossibility for Hand Refractometer usage for total solids determination. The results, also, depended on sample fat content. Statistic parameters showed, however, that this refractometer can be used for determination of added water in milk.
