Reaction of some winter barley genotypes to Rhynchosporium secalis and influence on grain yield

During 1996, on the experimantal plots of the Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops Production, Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, the reaction of winter barley to Rhynchosporium secalis was investigated. The plants of domestic (Yugoslav) genotypes were artificially inoculated with pathogen population at different phenological stages of development. After the plants had been artificially inoculated at the stage of swolling, the symptoms of the disease were reproduced in the form of sporadic spots on leaf sheaths and on some leaves. When the plants were inoculated at later stages of development (flowering and the early milk stage), the symptoms of the disease manifested on all leaves, heads and awns, and the intensity of infected ranged from 5-75%. The reduction of grain yield in different barley genotypes, inoculated at the stage of swolling ranged from 4.97% (genotype LJ-65) - 64.6% (genotype LJ-15), at the flowering stage from 6.88% (genotype NS-329) - 69.57% (genotype LJ-65), and at the early milk stage from 6.45% (genotype NS-317) - 62.96% (genotype LJ-61).
