Effect of Permethrin on mitotic activity of cultured human lymphocytes

The effect of insecticide permethrin on mitotic activity and cell cycle kinetics on cultured human lymphocytes was investigated. Permethrin was added in cultures to obtain final concentrations of 1.2,3,6 and 12 mg/ml. The concentration of 6 mg/ml was calculated to correspond Ld-50 on rats. Permethrin significantly decreases mitotic index at all concentrations tested, whereas proliferation index as a parameter of cell cycle kinetics, was decreased at all concentations, except the lowest one (1.2 mg/ml). It can be concluded that permethrin exhibits cytostatic effects and slows down the progression of human lymphocytes through the cell cycle.
