The use of low quality and waste fuels is usually not possible in classical combustion technologies. In the paper it is shown that contemporary demands concerning the environment when using these fuels can be met with fluidized bed combustion technology. The state of the art of this technology is shown, illustrated with the working parameters achieved, number of manufacturers, number of erected units and types of fuels used. Given are the achievements and possibilities of domestic (Yugoslav) manufacturers. It is concluded that fluidized bed boilers can be convenient for heating and hot water provision purposes for smaller urban sites, using coal from local mine pits, low quality fuels, as well as wood waste and other solid and liquid waste fuels.
