Effect of traffic on lead content and forms in soil [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

Gardens and lawns on the main street of the village of Rumenka (near Novi Sad town, Serbia, Yugoslavia) have been analyzed for soil fertility and Pb content and forms. The main street is a part of the regional road R-102. Soil analyses have shown that the soils from the gardens had normal reaction and organic matter content. Excessive application of mineral fertilizers had lead to enormous increases of the contents of potassium and especially phosphorus which may negatively affect the nutritive values of the vegetables grown there. While the contents of the analyzed heavy metals were below the maximum allowed concentration (MAC), the content of total Pb was increased. Available Pb was especially high in the samples taken from lawns, obviously resulting from the heavy traffic. The results indicate that the lead from exhaust fumes, which first pollutes the air, accumulates mostly in soil strips along the road.
