Tagging of many important agronomic characters with molecular markers permits their application in marker assisted selection of sunflower. Molecular markers are not environmentally regulated, and thus are unaffected by the conditions in which the plants are grown and are detectable in all stages of plant growth. This makes marker assisted selection more effective than the traditional one. The results on the development of RAPD markers for drought resistance, Phomopsis helianthi resistance as well as for oil quality in Yugoslav NS sunflower lines are presented.
