In 1997, in Serbia (Yugoslavia), 5,177 ha were surveyed in order to determine the incidence of the beet necrotic yellow virus (BNYV) on the sugar beet fields. The survey covered a total of 97 plots from 57 sites, or 10% of total sugar beet acreage in the country. Plots from the production areas of all sugar refineries in Serbia (Vrbas, Crvenka, Zabalj, Bac, Senta, Zrenjanin, Kovacica, Kovin, Sremska Mitrovica, Belgrade, Srpska Crnja and Pecinci) were included in the sample. The BNYV (beet necrotic yellow virus) was found on 26% (1357 ha) of the acreage involved. The survey has shown that the BNYV (beet necrotic yellow virus) is not equally wide spread in all sugar beet growing areas of the country. The region of Srem had the highest incidence of the virus (69.08% of the afflicted acreage), followed by the regions of Banat (43.22%) and Backa (5.8%). Visual observations is not a reliable method for determining the presence and incidence of the BNYV (beet necrotic yellow virus). For reliable results, serological methods, such as the "DAS-ELISA" test applied in the present study, should be used. One of the more important measures for controlling rhizomania is the growing of tolerant hybrids and varieties on rhizomania-infected fields.
