Acute pesticide poisoning is important cause of world-wide morbidity and mortality. There is no relevant estimation of the incidence of these poisonings in Yugoslavia. Acute pesticide poisonings are responsible for 4.7% (accidental - 2%, self-poisonings - 2.7%) of all acute poisonings treated in Clinic of Toxigology and Clinical Pharmacology during 1999. Most of accidental poisonings happened by pesticide inhalation during application, because of inadequate use of protection equipment (only 1/3 patients used improvised masks and gloves). Poisonings by unintentional ingestion of pesticide were also very common (37%). In declining order of incidence, organophosphate insecticides, dinitrophenols, phenoxyacids and pyrethroids were responsible for poisoning. Poisonings by pesticide inhalation were mostly mild. Poisonings by ingestion of organophosates were severe in the most of cases, and the ingestion of dinitrophenol was fatal. There were no occupational intoxication in professionals. All accidental poisonings happened to farmers and persons who occasionally use pesticides in their plants, so they represent population at high risk for pesticide poisoning. Education must focus on these groups, including their families.
