The influence of aging process on seed viability and biochemical changes in sunflower seed

The investigations are done in order to determine the degree of biochemical changes during artificial and natural aging of sunflower seed, as well as their influence on seed viability and the ability to absorb water. The biochemical processes i.e. lipid peroxidation, as well as the decrease in superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities (especially pronounced by applied accelerated aging) were caused by both type of aging. These processes damaged the seed and negatively influenced the sunflower seed viability and water absorption ability. Of all studied seed aging parameters the most reliable results were obtained by studying dynamic of lipid peroxidation and vigour tests, especially cold test. The degree of seed damage and the ability of seed to resist the negative consequences of aging were influenced, beside duration of aging period, by type of storage and characteristic of sunflower lines.
