The effect of natural antioxidants extracted from plant species Ocimum basilicum

The plant species Ocimum basilicum L. (family Labiatae) was investigated. Radical-scavening activity of different extracts was analysed by Schaal oven test at 60 deg C. The inhibitory effects of these extracts, in concentrations of 0.02 and 0.05%, on the oxidation were compared with some commercial tocopherol mixture (0.02%). Petrol ether extracts showed pro-oxidative effect. Water-ethanolic extracts (2:8) showed significant antioxidant activity. The purified ethyl acetate extracts showed especially strong antioxidative effects with 2.1-2.5 times better protection factors than tocopherol mixture.
