Experiment with two lettuce cultivars (grown in a plastic house and in the field) were carried out on a characteristic garden soil that has been exploited for many years. The main purpose of the investigation was to see the degree of accumulation of some harmful substances in leaves of lettuce grown under these conditions. Besides determination of nitrate-nitrogen content, the content of important heavy metals (useful and toxic elements from the standpoint of human nutrition) was determined. Obtained results indicate the importance of cultivation practice as well as cultivar and leaf age in the accumulation of nitrates and some of the investigated heavy metals in lettuce leaf.
