Phenotypic variability and stability of the yield components in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Phenotypic variability and stability of the yield components (stem height, spike length, number of grains per spike, grain weight per spike, spike weight, grain weight per plant, plant weight, spike index, harvest index and spike/stem ratio) of 22 wheat genotypes were under study. Stability was followed using joint regression analysis according to Eberhart and Russell (1966). Variability of traits in study, and genotype/environment interaction were examined using analysis of variance, principal component analysis (PCA), as well as, cluster analysis. Interrelations of the yield components were established using correlation analysis. According to the results, the most stable traits appeared to be grain weight per plant, and harvest index, while the most unstable trait was grain number per spike. Significant, and highly significant values of correlation coefficients were calculated for the most of studied traits.
