Testing biosorption and bioaccumulation zinc ions by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae
1999
Dodic, S.
The paper presents the investigation of zinc biosorption by Saccharomyces cerevisae from different sources of yeast biomass, as well as the bioaccumulation during yeast growth on molasses and synthetic medium with increased zinc content. The obtained results showed that both commercial fresh active bakery yeast and biomass from yeast milk are efficient biosorbents of zinc ions at all experimental conditions. Freundlich's equilibrium model of adsorption isotherm can be used for the description of zinc ions biosorption. The global kinetic model of topochemical reactions "KEKAM" can be successfully used for the following of kinetics of zinc ions biosorption by yeast cells. The investigation of zinc ions bioaccumulation during growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells on molasses medium showed an increase of zinc content in yeast biomass, however also some difficulties due to settling of non-sugar components from molasses. The yield of bioaccumulation was lower compared to cells grown on synthetic medium.
